I’ve had an interest in alternative health, healing, esoteric spirituality, creativity, and music all my life. At birth, I was put up for adoption, and I was adopted six months later into a Western medical family (a surgeon and a nurse were my parents). I got a great education and was well taken care of, but the interests I cited above weren’t explained until my late thirties, when I met my biological mother, who was a Reiki master and a creative alternative healer. She established several holistic training schools, invented new forms of massage and yoga, had psychic abilities, and was a jazz singer earlier in her life. For some years, I helped her out with her web site and publishing needs, and got interested in Reiki while helping her update her Reiki training manuals. I received my first Reiki attunement from her in 2008 and began studying Reiki. Unfortunately, she died in December of that year, so I put any further training on hold until 2010, when it suddenly became clear that Reiki was going to be a bigger part of my life. I completed the Level I, Level II, and Advanced Reiki Training in the Usui Reiki Ryoho tradition, taking to it all quite naturally. It was as if I had been doing it my whole life. I felt Reiki flowing through me, initiating some major energetic changes and releasing some stubborn patterns from very early in my life.
In 2011, I completed my Reiki Master training in the Usui Shiki Ryoho style, deepening my connection to Reiki and expanding my toolkit of techniques. I also took some intensive training in Jikiden Reiki (Shoden and Okuden levels), which is very close to the original Reiki taught by Usui Sensei. Having studied both Western and Japanese Reiki techniques, including both the outgoing health-oriented techniques and inner spiritual techniques, enables me to be able to use Reiki effectively at many different levels and for a wide variety of purposes.
Mikao Usui, founder of Reiki, developed specific meditations to both connect to Reiki and let it flow freely. I feel fortunate to have had a great foundation — thirty years worth of spiritual and health practices — coming into Reiki. My experience with meditation, yoga, qi gong, growth work, creativity development, and other spiritual work help me connect with Reiki at a deep level and make it a rich experience for both my clients and myself. I experience greater clarity, more energy, more joy, and more presence daily as a result of my Reiki practice.
A special thanks to my two Reiki teachers
Lorry Salluzzi Sensei was my Usui Reiki Ryoho teacher. Her openness, perceptiveness, humor, and total dedication to Reiki are an inspiration to me. She brings joy, fun, and an inquisitive spirit to every class she teaches. And she brings her total attention to every question her students ask, sharing her wisdom and experience but also embodying the attitude that learning Reiki is a lifetime pursuit—there is always more to learn, no matter what credentials you have or how long you've been at it.
Frank Arjava Petter, my Jikiden Reiki teacher, is a living expression of the Reiki Principles taught by Usui. He creates an environment of total acceptance, compassion, and playfulness, while at the same time drawing everyone into a shared experience of the depths of what Reiki is. His many years of dedication to exploring the roots of Reiki have brought forth knowledge that has benefited practitioners all around the world, and yet his demeanor is one of innocence, care, and complete equality with every student on the human level.
Your own Reiki journey
The very nature of Reiki is that it is not self-contained; it wants to move, flow, connect, and transform. Because of this, Reiki is the most powerful energetic practice I’ve been involved with. You can practice Reiki on yourself, but it really lets loose when you open up and let it move through you and into everyone and everything else around you. If you find yourself loving Reiki after experiencing it and want to learn to channel it yourself, either to continue your own healing/growing process or to help others, let me know and we'll schedule a class for you. I am authorized to teach all levels of Reiki and would love to help you progress further on your path to wellbeing.
